The tiny East Cork hamlet of Lisgoold is located to the south of Ballincorrig and held its own steeplechase meetings in the late 19th century. The first widely reported meeting was held on Thursday 16th January 1890 on a course of one mile circumference a short distance from the hamlet. The meeting was well attended, although the heavy going deterred a number of runners, making fields low in number and less competitive. The opening Welter race over 3 miles was won by Mr K Madigan’s Flirt of Ennis, getting the better of True to the Core. The Tallyho Plate went to Mr E Quirke’s Musket; the Ballincorrig Plate to Mr E Byrne’s Miss Lucy, while the feature Lisgoold Plate attracted just two runners and went to Flirt of Ennis. The event was deemed to be a success and the next year a meeting took place on Tuesday 10th March 1891. However, although a large crowd had enjoyed a number of races, just before the final race the stand gave way in the centre, causing a good proportion of the occupants to be thrown 15 feet underneath the refreshment saloon. Racing was immediately abandoned and the injured treated by the local doctor.
